Arete Biosciences is a cutting-edge medical device development consulting firm, made up of a team of scientists and engineers passionate about creating a positive impact on global health. Our primary focus has been the design, development, and management of automated molecular diagnostic systems.

We are continuing to build a best-in-class technical team in Carlsbad, CA. We are looking for an exceptional Staff Mechanical Engineer to serve as a technical lead, focused on the early research, tech feasibility and eventual development of automated molecular diagnostic assays.

Role Overview: Staff Mechanical Engineer will take on a lead role in the design & development of products at Arete. The role may include managerial responsibilities in a matrix management role.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Leads the design and development of instrument subsystems, consumables, accessories, and associated test and assembly fixtures.

  • Contributes to the development of product requirements & generates relevant documentation to support quality system requirements.

  • Designs and assembles proof-of-principle prototypes. Conducts feasibility studies of the design to determine ability to function as intended. Uses the data to drive design iterations.

  • Leads troubleshooting efforts to determine root cause for mechanical failures

  • Work with the larger team to evaluate and integrate technologies into a platform that meets product requirements.

  • Maintain detailed documentation throughout all phases of research and development and assist in transfer to manufacturing.

  • Coordinate activities with outside suppliers and consultants to ensure the delivery of supplies or services needed to meet scheduled timelines.

Qualifications and Skills:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a Mechanical Engineering with 7+ years of relevant professional experience; OR a master’s degree in a STEM discipline with 5+ years of relevant professional experience; OR a PhD in STEM with 3+ years of relevant professional experience

  • Extensive experience in mechanical engineering field, with specific experience in the design of instrumentation and/or thermoplastic consumables SolidWorks, and tolerance analysis.

  • Ability to work hands-on to make prototypes and test fixtures

  • Experience with transferring designs to manufacturing

  • IVD experience and experience working in a QSR/ISO13485 regulated environment

  • Strong initiative and follow-through in executing project responsibilities, overcoming obstacles and balancing multiple priorities effectively through strong technical and/or project leadership experience

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

  • Moderate physical effort. Requires sitting, standing, bending, repetitive precision pipetting, the ability to lift up to 40lbs

  • Work environment involves exposure to potentially hazardous materials and situations that require following safety procedures and the use of Personal Protective Equipment

Benefits include:

  • Salary commensurate with experience, ranges 125 to 175k per year
